Afternoon tour July 6

Our afternoon tour took us outside of Antigua, so Jeff stayed at the apartment with AnnaMaria. Our agency requests tht the babies don't leave Antigua for fear of problems with the police. There is certainly no point in taking any chances! Claire finished up her Spanish lessons and joined us for lunch and the afternoon tour.

Jeff and AnnaMaria seemed to enjoy some time alone and it was great for me to get away a little bit and see some of the countryside.

Claire with Grandma Janice and Grandpa Richard at lunch.

Ladies in a village doing laundry. This water is clean since it runs off the mountain. In the lower part of the photo you can see a washing bay with a green bar of soap. This soap is about the size of 1/2 of a soda can. I have noticed Surf brand in the supermarket. And...to think my new house has two nice washing machines. We are so very spoiled!

Below: Lily in native clothing at the market in San Antonio. We didn't buy much there. We have made quite dear friends from San Antonio who come to Antigua each day to sell. San Antonio is about 7 miles from Antigua and the women come to town on "chicken buses" (more on that later). The textiles and handicrafts seem to be very well made, but there is SO much of it. Everywhere you turn there seems to be the same stuff for sales. We wonder how the people make a living. However, it doesn't seem to take much to get by for the native people. Someone told us that a vendor shared that $40 in sales was a very good day. Keep in mind that it may have taken weeks for someone to make that $40 worth of stuff.
