Doggie Devotional

Our oldest dog is Will. He is an English setter bird dog and we got him as a puppy. The three older kids went with us to Arkansas to adopt him and it’s a trip we will always remember. Jeff and some of the kids slept in the garage with him for a few days when he got home, so he would know he was loved. He is a good bird dog and faithful companion to Jeff.

Last week we awoke to a terrible ruckus in the middle of the night. There was howling and barking like I haven’t heard in a long time. Jeff went out on the porch and later to the back yard to investigate. He saw Will circling (and marking) his pen from the outside and then saw a coyote running across the backyard. Jeff said Will was pretty calm and went obediently back into his pen.

I’m not quite sure what the message is (I can think of several), but I was so touched. We’ve lived here eight months and Will has never offered to get out of his pen. He is clearly capable, but only exercised that option when he felt he needed to protect his turf.
